Are any of your institutions utilizing CT to evaluate the LAA appendage prior to afib ablations, rather than TEE?

    Hi all,

We have been using CT for a while now in lieu of TEE. Especially helpful for redo procedures.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have been using CT rather than TEE.  It's worked incredibly well and we have not had any issues thus far.

We used CT to evaluate LAA leak at 45 days during the start of the pandemic; however, we returned to using TEE due to a few inaccuracies/discrepancies with results. We do not use CT pre procedure, only TEE.

We were using a CT for all de novo PVIs (for mapping)  until the recent contrast shortage. If there was an questionable thrombus, if they were on warfarin, or recent interruption of DOAC thenwe would also check a TEE.
Currently we aren't really using CTs.

As I understand it, they are performing CT 1-2 weeks prior and re-evaluating with ICE during the procedure for most of our AF ablations.

Our practice is cta on pre-op day, unless the have significant renal disease.  TEE at start of case if the Chad2 score >= 3 or of there was any questionable thrombus on the CTA.
