Just had to share with those who could appreciate 😊

I don't know how this got in the kitchen drawer by my wife has been using it for shopping lists...

I got this from my Medtronic Rep in 2002, Insync was the 1st FDA approved market release CRT device.

Seems like just yesterday but wow have we come a long way!

    I do!

Moving ahead a few years, I also still have the little blue clam that Medtronic gave with the Sample Jewel ICD.

My kids loved that clam 😊

I still have a demo of the original CPI ICD patches and device, the original Medtronic "PCD", the old CPI programmer with the ticker tape and of course my AVID mug.

I remember when Sotalol was still a number and "mode switching" was a cool new feature.

We have come so far and what a ride it has been...... watching the field of Electrophysiology unfold over the past several decades.

    Julie Shea,

The good old days of ICD implants in the OR, we used a rheostat that biomed had made for us to put pt in VF then everyone sweated bullets while RN counted 20 seconds before delivering the monophasic shock.

Medtronic and CPI pacer checks when you had to use "Gameboy" and have the right IC card to check pacemaker. Always fun when pt came in ER with unknown device trying to figure out which card to use...

Having to change base rate to make sure your programming changes took before the Pacesetter Rocket Scientist from NASA came out with bidirectional telemetry for pacemakers.

I recently saw the old Gameboy Medtronic programmer on sale on E-Bay... If I had known you could sell them years later, I would of held on to mine 😉

Back to seeing pts, always fun remembering the not so good old days!

Thank you Julie for reminiscing with us, and how extraordinary the field of Electrophysiology is.

AHPs have been here to welcome and learn the new technologies allowing us to deliver safe, evidence-based care to our patients.

The best is yet to come!  #wearehrs

    Wendy Boettcher,

Got you beat by a few years 😊 – I took the NASPE Exam for 1st time in 1996.

It gets fuzzy back then but I started as tech in the new EP lab at George Washington Univ Hospital in the early 90's

We had an E for M setup with photo paper. A big part of study was folding all the paper after the EP study.

I was tech during CAST study and remember when cardiologist came into lab to tell us the study had been ended early because the antiarrhythmic drugs were harming patients...

It has been such a pleasure to watch the Evolution of EP from the days of "those whacky docs" that did all day studies in the dark, with no good therapeutic options to offer patients, to where we are today with so many options for patients that truly improve their quality of life.

Awesome!  I'm so old I had to look up when I took NASPExAM. LOL  1996 it says 😎  I started at St Luke's Houston device clinic then went to Intermedics and on and on.  I love running into other "old" folks!!!

I'm not that old. I had a neighbor once that randomly pulled out one of the first Telectronics devices to be explanted along with its corresponding preformed J. Turns out the guy was one of the lawyers involved in the litigation and kept the system to commemorate his victory. It is a small world.

    That's an awesome story!

Was there for the Teletronics Accufix, we called it the Accuperf!  The lead had a metal wire that made the lead into a J shape with the constant movement in the heart the wire would eventually wear through the outer lead casing and then perforate the atrium. Really nasty and trying to extract the lead before we had excimer lasers was a high-risk procedure. Lots of underwear changes after those procedures if you catch my drift 😊

Saw that you are NAVY when I started in EP Navy had a Corpsman training program for EP at Walter Reed and in San Diego.

I could be wrong but I think they ended that a few years back...

Anyhow, when the Corpsman left Navy most were immediately scooped up by industry.

This was before there were any training programs for device specialist, back then it was all OJT, very sink or swim (pun intended) 😊

    Correct!

There is Navy EP and Walter Reed, Portsmouth and San Diego. However only Walter Reed maintains sufficient volume to retain full time EP techs; this is where I was trained.

I did didactics with Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences and did all clinical hours and hands on training via Walter Reed.

Most new techs coming out of Walter Reed are being absorbed by Biosense Webster or Medtronic. This is due to a program called skillbridge. It allows service members to effectively get up to 6 months of FREE leave to cross train with future employers and complete orientation while still on active duty. This benefits the company, who basically save on 6 months worth of free pay/benefits and the servicemembers who jump start their careers.

Establishing skillbridge is sort of a regulatory headache for the companies; so only J&J and Medtronic are signed up.

You might say that I am an Old Timer!
My first NASPE meeting was in Toronto in 1989 after 2 years into device follow-up and 12 years of Cardiology Nursing. My then EP physician W Ben Johnson introduced me to Ken Stokes and John R Helland, legendary pacing Lead engineers/scientists. It was at that chance meeting in the hallway that Ken and John both said that "someday" we would have leadless pacemakers. I said, "Not in my lifetime!".  I remember that like yesterday!

I have something that I need to pass on or dispose and wondering if HRS would want this for their historical exhibit.
Even though I am an "old timer", I do not recall using a TTM like this!!  (See photos attached!)

It has been a great ride and I still love the area of device therapy!

I was there with you watching EP grow from many hour diagnostic cases with little to offer patients to true therapeutic options like radiofrequency ablation and ICD's. Going from Analog E for M systems with miles of Z-fold paper to all digital systems. We've come so far.

These trips down memory lane remind me of the days during the transition of ICDs from epicardial systems requiring a median sternotomy to transvenous leads and tunneling to a "belly box" when the generators were still too big to place on the pectoralis major muscle.  Once, I brought home a demo subcutaneous patch which my daughter promptly named a "floppy fly swatter."  The name stuck.  It's truly amazing considering all the advances that have occurred over our careers.  I'm eternally grateful to have been a part of it from the beginning.
