Device clinic operations/Encrypted thumb drives

    Good morning,

I recently introduced an updated Biotronik programmer to our clinic for use.  In going through the process our cybersecurity team wants us to convert to the usage of encrypted thumb drives for use with all our programmers and uploading to Murj and the EHR.  We have been using the same process for years without this requirement and have never had a data breach with devices.   Is anyone else using this process or being forced to do so? Additionally, the new Medtronic I-Pads utilize a Duolink and I am assuming you would need to purchase an adapter to use the encrypted drive.  Any information would be most helpful.

    Thank you,

    Mike

    Hi Brian,-

At University Hospitals of Cleveland Device Clinic we have been using the Apricorn usb drive.  Not every encrypted drive will work with every programmer.  We do not use Murj.  -paul

    Hi all,

We've been using encrypted USB >5 years (Apricorn), can't remember exactly when. Originally the Aegis Secure Key ASK-256, that worked for all programmers. But if you reformatted, it won't work on Abbott programmers. I've spoken with Abbott and our IT and no one could give me an answer about why it won't work after reformatting. We tried changing file allocation type and that still didn't work. This particular model is no longer available to buy.

I know the Aegis secure Key ASK3Z, once reformatted to FAT32 file type, does not work for Encore Medtronic and does not work with Boston Scientific. Reformatted as NTSF file type, it only works with Biotronik.

But I have found success in the Aegis secure Key  ASK3-NX, which seem to work on all programmer. Although I have not had to reformatted the USB thumb drive, so don't know what would happen if it was reformatted.

For the Medtronic Ipad, there is no way to download to Aegis secure Key, we couldn't find any adapter that would allow this. When it was initially rolled out, we tried troubleshooting this with Medtronic and our IT security. We have found that you can have it load through a secure wifi network that your IT department can set up with Medtronic. This allows it to upload through wifi to sessionsync to Paceart, so that you have your PDF file. Not sure if Murj has this feature, but they might be able to set up this method to upload through wifi. Hope this helps!
